Volunteers needed for Hurricane Irene Recovery

On August 27, 2011, Hurricane Irene made landfall on the North Carolina Outer Banks. Its high winds combined with high tides causes widespread North Carolina damange due to winds, rain, and flooding, reaching further inland than most hurricanes. Floods reached areas which had never previously flooded, leaving homeowners with damage not covered by standard homeowner insurance. 38 counties were declared eligible for FEMA Individual Assistance.

Some of the damage has been covered by insurance. An additional part has been covered by SBA (government) loans or FEMA grants. But much of the damage will not be covered by these sources. The unmet needs will be met by volunteers, making repairs with donated materials.

Skilled and unskilled workers are needed now. Don't wait. Put together a team now from your congregation or friends. Go for a few days or a week or more. Housing and meal arrangements will be provided, or bring your RV. Check our Volunteer page for a list of opportunities.

Green Chair receives assistance

Green Chair Check Presentation

On February 6, 2012 Wade Chestnut and Larry Marks of the Wake Interfaith Disaster Team presented a check for $11,675 to Beth Smoot and Jackie Craig of The Green Chair Project. The Green Chair provided gently used furniture, linens, and housewares to nearly 90 tornado survivor families. Their minimal fees, used to cover expenses, were paid by our partner agencies, either directly or through the Wake Interfaith Disaster Team. This check represents the final payment.
